Photos: SARS kill six kidnappers in Cross River State, rescue female victim

   The Special Anti -Robbery Squad of the Cross River State Police Command has rescued a woman and killed six suspected kidnappers in Ikom Local Government Area. Spokesperson of the command , ASP Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the development on Wednesday,  said the suspected kidnappers had been under the trail of the police since they abducted the woman four days ago. She said that men of the SARS unit on gathering intelligence information traced the kidnappers to their hideout in the bush where the shooting occurred. "Our men today had an encounter with some kidnappers in Ikom local government area while trying to rescue an abducted woman in their captivity. During the process of rescuing the victim , the kidnappers engaged our men in an exchange of fire and we were able to rescue the woman while six of the kidnappers were shot dead. "We also arrested two of the kidnappers and our men are bringing them down to Calabar as we speak," the spokesperson said....

Why we should not glorify Nigeria’s internet penetration figures

    In its most recent report for the month of September, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) put the number of internet users in Nigeria at 93 million,  a slight increase from the 92.1million  reported in August. It is pertinent to clarify that the term “internet users” includes subscribers who pay for Internet access (dial-up, leased line and fixed broadband) and people who have access without paying directly, either as a member of a household or from work, school, a public library or Internet café. Going by Nigeria’s population of over 180 million people, what this tells us is that about half of Nigerians are online — which in itself should spur the internet economy. But that remains to be seen. Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology for Innovation Foundation,   notes   that internet penetration is positively related with economic prosperity.
